Best Place For A Suburban Green Gal To Settle?
I’m at a place in my life where my roots have not yet been planted but I know if I sit in one place to long they’re going to get stuck in the mud. I was born and lived all of my life on Long Island, in a small suburban town about 1.5 hours from NYC. The excessive, selfish, consumer mentality drives me crazy and yet is inevitably part of my everyday life. I’d like to find a place in this country where people feel a responsibility for what they consume and how their actions affect the environment. I’m hoping such a place would have free trade products more accessible. Is this a fantasy?

That place exisits all over the world. There are cities who have taken some great strides toward sustainability, but even in those locations you have people how live excessive lives and unchecked consumerism. You have to create the world you want to live in. I prefer to stay where I am and share what I have learned in an attempt to increase the number of people who care about the environment and begin to make changes that matter.

While California has lots of Environmentally conscious places, Many University towns would probably prove to your liking.
Try Duke in NC, Ann Arbor MI, Columbia MO, Ft. Collins CO, Flagstaff AZ, Tuscon AZ, Taos NM, Seattle WA, Bend OR, and many places in Vermont and NH.

Definitely move to the west coast. Part of your final destination depends on the weather you prefer. Parts of California are very green. SF is starting to catch up but any bay area city near BART is amazing. Oregon is good too. Washington is a little colder.

go west. However, there are few jobs and the pay will be so low you won’t be able to afford all those nice organic foods for sale and you’ll end up eating regular food, living in a 50 year old house that just barely stands up.
Good luck
