In 1990 the government of Guatemala
created the two-million-hectare Maya Biosphere Reserve (MBR). The reserve includes a multiple-use area where commercial exploitation of forest resources is allowed, but its core zones are protected against all activities other than those judged to be environmentally benign, such as scientific research and ecotourism.
