by admin in Green Energy

Are people buying more green products? or do they think its too expensive and are meeting ends meet, its enough of a worry than the consequences of their consumer behaviour on the environment?

    yes and no. things i used to buy, which i believed were better for the environment e.g. organic food, natural cleaning products etc i have had to move away from, as i find them more expensive than non-organic produce…in the past we spent more money on organic meat, and tried to eat less meat per week to justify the cost. now we even find this expensive.
    on the flipside, we are much less wasteful with food…leftovers get frozen or made into new meals.
    we look at second hand furniture etc now instead of automatically buying new.
    we plan journeys better to ensure one trip does everything instead of jumping in the car several times a day. we are buying much less than we used to e.g. clothes etc. so i guess we are consuming less resources which i believe is just as beneficial to the environement as buying ‘green products’.
    we are also thinking of planting our own vegetables…and so will hopefully illiminate alot of the packaging that is coming into our home, as well as reducing the amount of money we spend.
    hopefully it will all balance itself out!

    No! For the most part people are going along in the same way as they always did. The only difference is that they moan and grumble more.

    I personally believe that in our current global economic downturn consumers are looking for bargains where best price and cheap deals rule. There is little economic incentive to purchase only green products least of all investments that require high initial expenditure like solar energy systems and eco friendly thermo insulation. Sadly I fear consumer behaviour in being totally green takes a poor second place when disposable incomes become tight.
    Edit;
    One simly and easy way everyone can help become greener more during the credit crunch is by purchasing foodstuffs that isn’t in packaging, simply buy veg from the market instead of supermarket chains, just as easy and loads of fun preparing food. Who knows we might all enjoy becoming home chiefs.

    some green products are so economic all superior to more traditional counterparts that economic down turns will force people into using them. Number one example is solar water heating systems. These systems are much more economical than LPG, propane or electric systems.

    If people had any sense they would. Buy a quality product that will last for years instead of a cheap one that will break in weeks and need replacing. That’s as green as you can expect from many people.

    It is an opportunity to reshape the economy
    Compare it to a car which is easier to steer away from its original path as it drives slower.
