I started by making changes in my own life and I do belong to a couple organizations. I support my local agriculture and by about 90% of my food from my region. I'm not ready to give up bananas or coffee. I do subscripe to green energy and have solar panels. Planted a large garden and can much of what I grow, have cut my garbage down about 75% and just in general buy less.
I think the largest contribution I'm making is the volunteer work I do at the Utility Exploration Center in my community. I help lead school tours and teach "green living" classes. We are supported by our utilities and we teach our residents how to use our resources better. We teach composting, water wise landscaping, energy efficient lighting, how to conserve energy and water in a variety of ways. We teach waste reduction and recycling, how to reduce toxins in your cleaning and beauty supplies, what agriculture resources are in our area etc. We constantly add classes and teachers, and we are becoming a one stop shop for people wanting to learn more sustainable lifestyles.
