The False Promise of Green Energy (Prof. Andrew Morriss – Acton Institute)
Acton Lecture Series (April 26, 2012) – Green energy advocates claim that transforming America to an economy based on wind, solar, and biofuels will produce jobs for Americans, benefits for the environment, and restore American industry. Prof. Andrew Morriss, co-author of The False Promise of Green Energy, shows that these claims are based on unrealistic assumptions, poorly thought out models, and bad data. Rather than leading us to an eco-utopia, he argues that current green energy programs are crony capitalism that impoverishes American consumers and destroys American jobs. Andrew Morriss is the author or coauthor of more than 60 book chapters, scholarly articles, and books. He is affiliated with a number of think tanks doing public policy work, including the Property & Environment Research Center, the Regulatory Studies Center at George Washington University, the Institute for Energy Research, and the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Morriss earned an AB from Princeton University and a JD, as well as an MA in Public Affairs, from the University of Texas at Austin. He received a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After law school, Morriss clerked for US District Judge Barefoot Sanders in the Northern District of Texas.
National Green Power Helps Businesses Install Commercial Solar Systems
by Windwärts Energie GmbH Article by Toan Dinh Commercial solar systems are, increasingly, a necessity. As more and more people around the world become conscious of the grave dangers posed to our global ecosystem by the widespread use of oil, gas, and coal, it behooves entrepreneurs to do everything in their power to ensure that their businesses are part of the solution, rather than the problem. National Green Power, an online retailer of solar cells for use in commercial solar systems, can help ensure that your company evolves with the times. Obviously, every effort to generate solar power begins with quality photovoltaic cells, and National Green Power sells a wide variety, to suit every need. The company carries panels from makers such as REC, Kyocera, Sun, Evergreen, and Sanyo. They will even consult with commercial solar system buyers on package rates for major projects. In addition to photovoltaic panels, the company sells solar hot-water anti-freeze systems, which contribute to the overall success of a commercial solar system installation by helping shave precious kilowatt hours [not to mention electric bill dollars] of your business’ monthly total. These solar hot-water systems are capable of replacing traditional gas or electric hot water heaters. Another important thing for any successful commercial solar system installation project to address is heating and cooling. If your business is located in a place with a highly variable climate, you know firsthand how much energy merely maintaining a comfortable temperature inside your properties can be. National Green Power sells what they refer to as the Power-Save Solar Attic Fan, a solar-powered fan that cools a building by using solar power to draw hot air out of attic spaces. An extremely thorough commercial solar system installation might even take advantage of National Green Power’s range of ICF [Insulated Concrete Form] building blocks, which greatly increase the ability of a structure to insulate itself from outside temperature fluctuations. Since these blocks are structural materials, they are probably only suitable for commercial solar system installation projects on buildings that have not yet been constructed. It would be difficult to use them to retrofit an existing building. Another major advantage to performing a commercial solar system installation on your business is that, in many cases, it is possible to reap rewards for doing so, in the form of tax incentives. These incentives can derive either from the federal government, or from the government of your home state. Often, they offset a significant amount of the cost of a commercial solar system. The remainder of the cost is, naturally, recouped over years of lower energy bills. Commercial solar system installations cost money, but sunshine is free. National Green Power is a nationwide provider of photovoltaic cells, hot-water anti-freeze hot water systems, Power-Save Solar Attic Fans, and other supplies for commercial solar system installations. Promotion Of Green Energy
by US Department of Labor National Standardization Technical Committee appliances clean utensils points Technical Committee Secretary Lu Jian Green Energy Home Appliances Refers to the design, manufacture, use and recycling process to consider the low consumption of resources and the environment on human health and damage to small appliances. Resource consumption of green energy-saving appliances and the environment on human health and the extent of damage at different times of the requirements are different, but the idea of green energy-saving appliances is the same. Green energy-saving appliances is a permanent issue, everyone has a responsibility and obligation to promote. Present, the technological level of China’s home appliance industry to the EU WEEE ( Electronic Electric The waste product instructions), RoHS (restriction in the electrical and electronic equipment on the use of certain harmful ingredients instructions), EUP (with Energy Product eco-design Framework Directive) 3 directive is no problem. In fact, their standard household appliances on the environment and the use of the safety of personnel is a requirement, but these three commands added to a number of indicators, or to raise a number of values of certain indicators. Therefore, China to promote green energy-saving appliances home appliance industry is not a technical issue, but the confidence and resolve. Our first priority is the firm belief, the determination to do the green energy-saving appliances can not be shaken. While green energy-saving appliances in the design, manufacture, recovery of the road will face many new difficulties, but difficulties and problems can be any concept of consciousness and technology through innovative solutions and can not hesitate. Second, the promotion of green energy-saving appliances is not only manufacturing the issue, it relates to everyone in society, we have the determination, conviction, and even existing home appliances, as long as the same can be achieved by the rational use of energy saving, reduction consumption results. On the contrary, even the green energy-saving appliances, if they are unreasonable use, simply be thrown away, would lose the value of its own energy. Therefore, we should strengthen our convictions and from now on, I start from. “Two sessions” on behalf of the resident removed a one-time equipment, the General Assembly to shorten the meeting time is a good example. Finally, the promotion of green energy-saving appliances is a long term, should be gradual, not to be “across the board, swarm” like to promote, impulsive, anxious, and thought one step is not desirable. Imagine all the current people’s homes are replaced with energy-efficient electrical products, at least 4 years to 5 years. Therefore, promotion of green energy-saving appliances should be able to realistically be carried out from ourselves and from every day life to start. For example, turning off lights every day to hand off the tap Air conditioning Temperature of reasonable adjustments, less open day car, in the time and place designated place abandoned household appliances. Everyone must have a saving families, saving the community, the idea of saving society. Promotion of green energy-saving appliances in the process must start from a little bit, do not do costly “achievement projects” flashy “image project” one step “ideal project.” Green energy-saving appliances is a philosophy, is always our goal. Promotion of green energy-saving appliances should be able to realistically implement, step by step to advance. In this issue appliance industry, there is no reason to become arrogant, complacent. The challenge of economic globalization, especially in the international Financial Test before the crisis, if our spiritual slack to make progress, it will miss opportunities. Green energy-saving appliances in the industry pushed for many years, but progress is not satisfactory. These events reflect the industry’s overall awareness, sense of urgency, responsibility is not enough, mainly for the management of relaxation, not enough solid work. Therefore, the promotion of green energy-saving appliances to establish a sense of responsibility and urgency, should be continued. Green Energy PR
by Lochinvar1 For companies of the environmentally friendly persuasion, it’s tempting to want to shout about those efforts from the rooftops in hopes of attracting positive attention. That can be a great move – as long as it’s done correctly. Green energy PR is a specialty honed by many communication professionals who are well-equipped to help your business make the most of your environmental friendliness initiatives. Some of those professionals have made a career out of green energy PR, while others have worked for organizations that inadvertently helped them develop the specialty because of in-house environmental friendliness initiatives. Lots of interesting sustainable energy projects are going on around the world right now. In New York, for example, there’s work being done to reach the goal of having 30 percent of all energy used statewide come from renewable sources. All over the country, schools are switching to more environmentally friendly bulbs and reworking policies to ensure that lights are turned off when they’re not being used. Schools with the resources to do so are even installing the kind of lights that switch off automatically when motion sensors don’t detect anyone in the room. Green roofing is also becoming more and more popular, especially on new buildings. The reason it’s important to have a professional involved in your green energy PR is because it’s easy to cross the line from appropriate to too much. Making your organization sound greener than it is is a practice known as “greenwashing,” and people are developing a keener eye for it – especially as so many organizations seek credit for their green initiatives without also seeking the counsel of a green energy PR professional. The public can be quite harsh when it suspects that an entity is taking more credit for environmental friendliness than it deserves. For example – large corporations that make a big deal when they put a green roof on a new building, or when one facility out of a thousand gets an Energy Star rating, can be accused of “greenwashing.” And that’s the danger of promoting such initiatives without the counsel of someone experienced with green energy PR. That’s not to say that even those businesses don’t deserve credit. Every little bit helps when it comes to conserving natural resources. The point is to illustrate the importance of seeking that credit with the finesse and expertise that a communication professional can provide. A communication consultant with experience in green energy PR can help you find the right balance – drawing positive attention to your environmental friendliness efforts in a truthful and sustainable manner. Green Building Precedent Set Hammer & Hand and Scott|Edwards Architecture Begin Nations First Commercial Passive House Retrofit
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) March 30, 2012 Portland builder Hammer & Hand and designer Scott|Edwards Architecture announced today a green building project that offers a new model for affordable transformation of existing commercial buildings energy performance. The Glasswood commercial Passive House retrofit will create office space that consumes 80% less energy than its conventional counterparts at an added cost of just $ 15/SF. For the first time in the United States the Passive House building energy standard will be applied to the retrofit of a commercial structure. Our building sector consumes nearly half of US energy, says Sam Hagerman, co-owner of Hammer & Hand and President of the Passive House Alliance US. Choose your poison. Whether its global climate change, dependence on foreign oil, or rising energy prices, we need to retrofit our buildings so that their performance is worthy of the 21st century. The question until now has been, how? Thanks to recent advances in building science and our understanding of how buildings function as dynamic systems, builders and designers can now address this question effectively. Passive House and PHIUS+ certification sit at the vanguard of this application of knowledge and technique. The term Passive House comes from the German Passivhaus, which literally translates as Passive Building. The standard combines advanced energy modeling with a suite of relatively straightforward construction and design principles to revolutionize the performance and comfort of buildings, from single family homes and apartment buildings, to schools and commercial structures. Though scores of Passive House projects have been completed or are underway across the US, a Passive House retrofit of a commercial building has never been done before. We have a unique opportunity here to both upcycle an existing, historic building, said Peter Grimm, architect with Scott|Edwards Architecture, and to fundamentally transform the way it performs and functions, both from an energy perspective and a human one. The Glasswood project employs the core principles of Passive House design: Extensive insulation, Elimination of thermal bridges that transfer heat or cold across the building envelope, Airtight construction, Continuous ventilation that recovers heat or cool energy, High performance doors and windows, Optimized solar and heat gains, and Sophisticated modeling. While the science and modeling behind Passive House is advanced, the suite of techniques used to get there is elegantly simple, said Hagerman. Its this simplicity that allows for the cost-effective transformation of a buildings performance and comfort. Glasswood promises to provide actionable lessons to builders and designers of commercial spaces across the country.
